Biographical Information

  • Reigned from 616BC until 578BC
  • Son of Demaratus of Corinth
  • Married to Tanaquil
  • Took the name Lucius Tarquinius Priscus once he moved to Rome (Formerly Lucumo)
  • Had daughter who married Servius Tullius

  • Became the fifth King of Rome.
  • First campaign was against the Latins. He captured Apiolae and returned home victorious with lots of plunder. (Livy 1.35)
  • Expanded Roman cavalry when in war with Sabines (Livy 1.37)
  • Invaded Sabine territory and Romans captured Collatia and the territory to the south and west of it. (Livy 1.37)
  • Final Campaign was against the Ancient Latins. No large battles were fought nor were any large forces engaged. (Livy 1.39)
  • Rome seized the towns of Ficulea, Cameria, Crusumerium, Ameriola, Medullia, and Nomentum. (Livy 1.39)
  • Built stone wall around the entire city, low lying areas and valleys which frequently flooded were draine by sewers which led to the Tiber River and the foundations of the Temple of Jupiter were laid. (Livy 1.39)

Significance

  • Increased the striking power of the Roman Army by expanding the cavalry. (Livy 1.36)
  • Fortified the city of Rome. (Livy 1.39)
  • First time a foreigner ruled Rome. (Livy 1.39)



Fun Facts

  • Circus Maximus started to celebrate victory over the Latins, then continued on as an annual event known as the Roman or Greek Games. (Livy 1.35)
  • Killed in 578BC by two men hired by Ancus' sons. The two men pretended to brawl and when the King came out one told his "story" while the other came up behind Tarquinius and split his skull with an axe. (Livy 1.41)
  • The eagle that took the cap off of his head signified an "approval from heaven" for Tarquinius Priscus to become king. (Livy 1.35)
